The Christmas season brings about a desire in many of us to be an obvious individual, to do things our way, and to make sure everyone around us, everyone with whom we come in contact, is well aware that everything we do and say could be done or said by no one but us.
This is the process of customization, and while that process is of importance to some folks all year ‘round, to others it’s especially crucial at Christmas. One of the leading vehicles we have to show our own unique personality at this time of year is in the selection, design, and even how we mail our Christmas cards.
While we can easily, and quickly, go out and buy a box of ready-made cards at any drug or department store, that doesn’t give us the chance to empmloy our personality, who we are, at the core of our message. The way this is done best is by sending out custom Christmas cards. Many companies, particularly online print companies, give you the option to select your design, select your own sentiment for the inside of the card, even pick the fonts and colors you want to use. You can put your family photo on the card if you like. You can take a pre-existing design that the company offers and tweak it to fit your own tastes. Or maybe you’re an artist . . . use one of your own works of art. As long as you can upload it to the company’s site, you can use it.
If you’re a writer, or if you’re fond of quotes from famous people, use your own words or your favorite quote to create your custom Christmas cards. Your only limits on customization are the limits you place on yourself and your own inspiration. As long as you have a finger and know how to point-and-click, and you enjoy a deep sense of imagination, you have all you need right in front of you to customize your holiday greeting cards to fit your own personal taste.
How often have you opened your mailbox to find a Christmas card from someone in your circle of friends and family, opened the envelope, and looked at the card with a less-than-enthusiastic glance. “Nice,” you murmur. “Aunt Bertha sent us a card.” As happy as you are to hear from Aunt Bertha, you just can’t get yourself worked up over a dime store, 1930s old-fashioned pre-printed-in-tiny-letters design card with the sentiment, “Happy Holidays” on both the front and inside. Just not inspiring.
But then you open the next card. It’s from your Uncle George, on your mother’s side, and it shows a crisp, clean winter scene on a foiled paper, vibrant colors, even textures, and on the inside, there’s a verse from a beautiful poem by Edgar Albert Guest, titled simply, “At Christmas.” You’ve always loved this poem (and Uncle George knows you’ve always loved this poem!) and, in particular, the quoted verse:
“. . . at Christmas kindness rules him and he puts himself aside // And his petty hates are vanquished and his heart is opened wide. // Oh, I don't know how to say it, but somehow it seems to me // That at Christmas man is almost what God sent him here to be.”
Which of these two cards are you going to remember, probably throughout the years? Of course the answer to that is the the custom Christmas card from your Uncle George, much more so than the simple store-bought card from Aunt Bertha.
It’s all in the personalization. Customizing your cards will make them memorable for years to come, and your cards will be anticipated by all to whom you send, from season to season to season. It’s a good feeling deep inside to know that your greeting will be considered special by everyone to whom it is sent, and that’s something you have the power to ensure.
Do you want to be just anyone, or do you want to be only you? May sound like an odd question but it really isn’t. Every chance you get to positively communicate with another person in a way that could come from no one but you is a chance to set yourself apart in a good way. There are so many opportunities in today’s world to blend in with the masses, and it’s usually easier to simply take that route. Life has gotten quite complicated in all that we have to do, all that we have to accomplish before the day is out, and it’s just less of a trial to get it all done as fast as possible, without really giving much thought to the actual process.
Yet there are some things we should take the time to brand, to personalize, so that we ensure it’s clearly ours and no one else’s. Our holiday greetings should be in that category. To send out custom Christmas cards is to show that we care enough to take the time for those of our inner circle, those people who mean enough to us for us to share our precious time, and our love of the season.
Take that time. It may require that you slice an extra hour out of your day somewhere else, but if you slow down long enough to put the care and love into your own special custom Christmas card, the people who receive your holiday card will definitely know the difference. They will immediately notice the affection behind your greeting, and feel that communication between you and them. They will undoubtedly do more than just open your card, glance at it, and then either casually put it aside or, even worse, put it in the trash. They will savor your card, read over it more than once, and even display it in a prominent place in their home or office holiday décor.
Why will they give your card that extra attention? Because you cared enough to send them extra attention. You cared enough to send them a custom Christmas card . . . and they noticed.
